You probably heard of DivX
;-) as a movie compression format. The whole 3ivx.com team, including
the creator of the DivX ;-) Player for Mac, want to offer the best and
most versatile codec. The goal is to optimize video compression to the
smallest possible file size, of a high quality and fully streamable, targeting
all important segments of the wired and wireless markets. The current
release is 5 to 20% better than the most efficient codecs out there. In
comparison with MPEG-2, 3ivx has a ratio of 1:12 while near DVD quality.
The 3ivx codec is based on the 2001 MPEG-4 framework, and is currently
being optimized on a regular basis. This download should allow the Apple
Quicktime Player to view 3ivx encoded .avi files, provided that Quicktime
4 or later is installed, A PowerMac G3 is considered the recommended minimum
for acceptable hardware playback.

| DivX ;-) 1b10 PPC
Freeware |
This is a separate movie
viewing package, with the sole purpose of viewing DivX ;-) encoded .avi
files. It requires the MacOS version of Microsoft Media Player 6.3 to
work, but will NOT work with the MacOS version of Microsoft Media Player
7. For a more complete history list, and suggestions for getting optimal
playback with the software, take a visit to The
DivX ;-) Source on the web. The author is also involved with the
development of the cross-platform benefits of 3ivx currently, it is unknown
whether further development of the DivX ;-) player will go any further
or not. Also, A PowerMac G3 is considered
the recommended minimum for acceptable hardware playback.

| MS Media Player 7.1.2 PPC Freeware |
Media Player is a player for one of the most increasingly common media groups found on the Web these days--Microsoft Windows Media. This player supports the following video codecs: MPEG4 v2, MPEG4 v3, MPEG4S, and JPG (Illustrated Audio); and audio codecs: WMAudio v1, WMAudio v2, Acelp.net, Voxware MetaSound, and MPEG II Layer 3. The version 7 series - which comes with a totally overhauled interface - finally supports the embedded playback of media in Web pages, as well as digital rights management (DRM) functionality. Still only plays .ASF and .WMV files, and general consensus among Mac users show this version to be very unstable, use with caution, or at least have the previous version, in case this version breaks DivX ;-), DivX, or 3ivX usage. |

| Sparkle 2.4.5 FAT
Freeware |
An MPEG-1 software solution
for playing both Quicktime MOV files, and MPEG (unmuxed, meaning no encoded
mpeg layer 1 or 2 audio) files. With the introduction of MPEG integration
into Quicktime, it might seem redundant to have, but this is also the
only solution for viewing MPEG files on older 68000 Macintoshes. This
program is no longer being developed, and PowerMac users will be better
served by the QuickTime MPEG extension.
